Mitsubishi Electric Invests In JIJ To Advance Quantum Optimization Middleware

Mitsubishi Electric is putting more money behind quantum computing.

The Japanese electronics giant announced that its ME Innovation Fund has invested in JIJ Inc., a Tokyo-based startup developing middleware for mathematical optimization using quantum computers and related technologies.

The investment is aimed at bringing JIJ’s JijZept development platform closer to commercial use by combining it with Mitsubishi Electric’s software implementation know-how and quantum technologies.

This is the ME Innovation Fund’s fifteenth investment to date.

Why Mitsubishi Electric Is Backing JIJ

JIJ builds tools that help companies turn complicated real-world problems into mathematical models that computers can solve.

That sounds technical, but the use cases are easy to recognize. Businesses often need to make better decisions around scheduling, logistics, energy use, transportation, manufacturing, allocation, and control. These problems can involve many moving parts and many constraints at the same time.

JIJ’s platform is designed to help businesses work through those challenges without requiring every user to have deep quantum computing expertise.

According to Mitsubishi Electric, the investment will allow the company to combine JIJ’s middleware-based development environment with its own application development experience, software implementation know-how, and quantum technologies, including interconnection technology for quantum computers.

JIJ Also Raised $5.2 Million In New Funding

The Mitsubishi Electric investment comes as JIJ announced a wider funding round worth JPY 840 million, or about US$5.2 million.

The round was led by Global Brain Corporation and included ME Innovation Fund L.P., KDDI Open Innovation Fund III, ANA Future Frontier Fund L.P., KURONEKO Innovation Fund II L.P., and Fujitsu Ventures Fund LLC.

JIJ said it will use the funding to advance its AI-enabled optimization platform, expand enterprise deployments of mathematical optimization, develop technologies for gate-based quantum computing, and support global growth.

The company said it has developed more than 60 use cases across energy, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunications, logistics, materials development, and the public sector.

What JIJ Brings To Mitsubishi Electric

JIJ’s main product is JijZept, a software suite built to support the optimization process from problem formulation to execution and continuous improvement.

The company is also developing JijZept AI, a cloud-based AI agent service for mathematical optimization. The service is designed to help users define requirements, build mathematical models, and run numerical experiments based on user requests.

For Mitsubishi Electric, the appeal appears to be JIJ’s position between quantum research and real enterprise deployment.

Yu Yamashiro, founder and CEO of JIJ, said the company works at the intersection of quantum computing and mathematical optimization to address complex challenges across industries.

He added that combining Mitsubishi Electric’s quantum computing technologies with JIJ’s platform could help accelerate the development of stronger customer solutions.

Quantum computing is still moving from research labs into practical industrial use.

Many companies are not looking for quantum hardware alone. They need software, middleware, development environments, and business-ready use cases that make quantum and hybrid quantum-classical computing useful.

The deal also follows Mitsubishi Electric’s recent quantum-related activity, including its 2026 memorandum of understanding with Quantinuum to explore advanced industrial engineering and design applications.

Mitsubishi Electric did not disclose the size of its investment in JIJ.

For now, the confirmed plan is collaboration. Mitsubishi Electric wants to integrate JIJ’s optimization platform with its own quantum computing technologies, while JIJ continues to expand its AI, optimization, and quantum middleware work across global markets.

If the partnership works, the result could be more practical tools for companies trying to solve complex planning, scheduling, logistics, and industrial optimization problems.
