Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Praises Elder Scrolls VI As Bethesda Workers Protest Microsoft Layoffs

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has shared a rare update on The Elder Scrolls VI after watching a live playthrough at Bethesda Game Studios, saying the long-awaited RPG showed “incredible” scale and story.

The post quickly caught attention from Elder Scrolls fans, but it also arrived as Bethesda workers protested Microsoft’s latest Xbox layoffs outside the studio’s Rockville, Maryland office.

Asha Sharma Praises The Elder Scrolls VI After Bethesda Visit

According to Aftermath, Sharma visited Bethesda Game Studios on August 11, where workers had placed a giant inflatable union rat outside the office. Developers also planted red flags outside the studio, with each flag representing a laid-off Bethesda worker.

“Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning,” Sharma wrote on X, according to Aftermath. “The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.”

The censored part of the post sparked immediate speculation among fans. Some wondered whether Sharma had hidden a subtitle, location, or other unreleased detail connected to The Elder Scrolls VI.

Bethesda has not announced a release date for The Elder Scrolls VI. The game was first revealed in 2018 and remains one of Xbox’s most closely watched first-party projects.

Bethesda Workers Protest Microsoft’s Xbox Layoffs

The timing of Sharma’s post also drew attention because of the protest happening outside Bethesda’s office.

Bethesda technical producer and union member Nathan Hahn said workers wanted Microsoft leadership to see how layoffs had affected development teams. Hahn said the red flags were meant to serve as a public reminder of the people cut from the studio.

Chris Kerr of Game Developer also shared a Bluesky post showing the giant inflatable rat and red flags outside Bethesda’s Rockville office. Kerr said the protest was timed to coincide with a visit from Xbox leadership.

OneBGS, the union representing Bethesda Game Studios workers, also said workers placed hundreds of flags outside headquarters to honor game workers laid off by Microsoft in 2026.

Microsoft’s Xbox Restructuring Hit Bethesda And ZeniMax Teams

Microsoft announced on July 6 that it would cut about 3,200 roles across Xbox during fiscal year 2027, including about 1,600 role eliminations immediately. Sharma described the move as the “most significant restructure in XBOX history.”

In the same memo, Microsoft said reductions would affect several parts of the gaming business, including Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios.

The Communications Workers of America said the first wave of cuts included hundreds of union video game workers. CWA also said the layoffs hit teams at id Software, Bethesda Game Studios, and ZeniMax Online Studios, whose workers have contributed to franchises including Doom, Quake, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout.

CWA argued that the workers behind Xbox’s biggest franchises deserve stronger protections as Microsoft restructures. The union also warned that the layoffs could hurt game quality and lead to longer release delays.

Fans See Two Very Different Stories Around The Elder Scrolls VI

For fans, Sharma’s post created two very different conversations.

On one side, her comments suggest The Elder Scrolls VI is playable internally and continuing through development. On the other, Bethesda workers and labor groups are warning that deep cuts could affect morale, production timelines, and the future of Microsoft’s biggest game franchises.

The moment also put new pressure on Xbox leadership. Sharma became CEO of Microsoft Gaming earlier this year, with Microsoft later noting that her title became CEO XBOX after the gaming division was renamed XBOX in April.

As of this writing, Microsoft and Bethesda have not released a new public statement addressing the latest protest outside Bethesda’s Rockville office.
