Elden Ring Patch 1.17 is not a throwaway update, it is a final-sprint tune-up for players returning to the Lands Between with fresh gear, new classes and another reason to start over.

Bandai Namco has released Elden Ring Patch 1.17 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, bringing support for the Tarnished Pack DLC and several gameplay balance adjustments.
The update arrived ahead of the Tarnished Pack release on Friday, August 28, 2026, and is required for online play.
Bandai Namco said players must apply the latest update before playing.
Elden Ring Patch 1.17 Adds Tarnished Pack Support
The biggest part of Patch 1.17 is support for the Tarnished Pack, which adds new content for players who purchase the DLC.
The pack includes two new starting classes, Idus Knight and Heavy Knight, both selectable during character creation.
Bandai Namco said the equipment from these new classes can also be obtained by purchasing it from merchants in the Lands Between or by finding it in the world.
The DLC also adds new weapons, three Spectral Steed Attire options for Torrent, and two NPC invasion events.
One invasion event appears in Caelid, while another appears in Leyndell, Royal Capital. The Leyndell event will not happen after the area changes to Leyndell, Ashen Capital.
Torrent Gets New Customization Options
Torrent is also getting a small but noticeable visual upgrade.
Patch 1.17 adds three Spectral Steed Attire options: Tree Sentinel Spectral Steed Attire, Silver of Caria Spectral Steed Attire and Funereal Night Spectral Steed Attire.
The Tree Sentinel version can be found in Stormveil Castle, the Silver of Caria version can be found in Liurnia of the Lakes, and the Funereal Night version can be found in Altus Plateau.
Once players obtain any Spectral Steed Attire, a new option to change Torrent’s appearance will be added to the Site of Grace menu.
Weapon and Magic Balance Changes Arrive
Patch 1.17 also adjusts several weapons, skills, sorceries and incantations.
The Smithscript Dagger and Rellana’s Twin Blades now have increased critical hit power. The Smithscript Axe, Smithscript Spear and Spear of the Impaler now use less stamina for throwing attacks and deal more power with those attacks.
The Carian Sorcery Sword also received a notable change. Its Intelligence scaling now increases the attack power of all damage types, which could make it more appealing for magic-focused builds.
Greatshields also received broad improvements.
Several shields now have increased guard boost, while some also received weight reductions. That should make defensive builds feel less punishing for players who prefer blocking over rolling.
Magic users were not left out.
Founding Rain of Stars and Carian Retaliation now deal more power, while Meteorite and Meteorite of Astel have shorter casting times. Gravitational Missile was also changed so its gravity projectile will not explode immediately when it hits terrain such as the ground or a wall.
PvP Gets Its Own Balance Adjustments
The update also makes several PvP-only changes.
The Rakshasa’s Great Katana now causes players to take more damage from other players while attacking. That makes the weapon riskier in PvP, especially for players who rely on aggressive pressure.
Bandai Namco also reduced the PvP power of Rugalea’s Roar. Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay were adjusted so enemy players spend less time unable to move from hit reactions when struck by those incantations.
Patch 1.17 Fixes Great Katana and PC Issues
Patch 1.17 also includes several bug fixes.
Bandai Namco fixed a bug where critical hits with Great Katana weapons dealt lower-than-expected power against large enemies. It also fixed a bug where jumping attacks with Great Katana weapon types could be parried.
On PC, the patch fixes a keyboard and mouse issue that prevented camera control during NPC dialogue. It also fixes a bug where resetting keyboard and mouse settings did not properly restore several options to their default values.
Tarnished Pack Launches Alongside Switch 2 Edition
RPG Site reported that Patch 1.17 brings other versions of Elden Ring in line with the new Nintendo Switch 2 Tarnished Edition, which launches on August 28, 2026.
The Tarnished Pack content is included by default in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2.
For existing players on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam, the Tarnished Pack arrives as additional content.
PlayStation and Xbox players get access on August 28 at 12:00 a.m. local time, while Steam access begins at 7:00 JST, 00:00 CEST and 15:00 PDT.
After applying the update, the title screen should show App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17.
