GTA 5 Finally Runs on the Original Nintendo Switch But Rockstar Had Nothing to Do With It

Seeing GTA 5 running natively on a Nintendo Switch after nearly 13 years is impressive, but players should not confuse this fan project with the official Rockstar release many have been waiting for.

GTA 5 running through an unofficial native port on Nintendo Switch

A group of modders has managed to get Grand Theft Auto V running directly on the original Nintendo Switch, something Rockstar Games never officially brought to Nintendo’s first hybrid console.

The project is linked to developer M0jso and Paralympics Productions.

Recent demonstrations show GTA 5 running on Switch hardware without streaming the game from another computer or using Android or Linux. The achievement is real, but the experience comes with major limits, including low frame rates, modified hardware and software, and a reliance on leaked GTA 5 source code.

Is GTA 5 Officially Available on Nintendo Switch?

The answer is No.

Rockstar Games has not released GTA 5 for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. The version making headlines is an unofficial homebrew port created by modders.

That distinction is important because there is no official GTA 5 Switch release from Rockstar, no normal Nintendo eShop version tied to this project, and no support from Nintendo or Rockstar.

Rockstar has released other Grand Theft Auto games on Switch. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which contains GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, launched digitally for Nintendo Switch on November 11, 2021. GTA 5 itself remained absent.

The new project finally puts Los Santos on the original Switch, but only through unofficial means.

How Well Does GTA 5 Run on the Original Switch?

Performance is where the limitations become clear.

Reports examining the port say GTA 5 generally runs at around 10 to 25 frames per second when the Switch is operating at its normal clock speeds. An overclocked Switch can get closer to 30 FPS in some areas, although performance can still fall during busier scenes.

That is far from the simple plug-and-play experience expected from a commercial Nintendo release.

The port also requires a modified Switch capable of running custom software. One widely shared demonstration used a Switch OLED and reported a game installation of about 49GB.

Those requirements mean this is better viewed as a technical experiment than a practical new way for most people to play GTA 5.

How Did Modders Get GTA 5 Running on Switch?

The project reportedly uses material from the GTA 5 source-code leak that became public in 2023.

The team adapted and recompiled game code for the ARM architecture used by the original Switch’s Nvidia Tegra X1 processor. Reports say the project is based on the newer GTA V Legacy branch associated with PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One rather than simply copying the older PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 release.

The developers also had to reduce demands on the Switch’s hardware. Reported changes include lowering draw distances and particle effects and compressing assets so the game can work within the console’s memory limits.

Because the project relies on leaked source code and modified consoles, it should not be treated like a normal fan-made game or an authorized Rockstar product.

Why Is This Port Interesting After Nearly 13 Years?

GTA 5 originally launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. Rockstar later brought it to newer PlayStation and Xbox consoles and PC, but Nintendo Switch never received an official version.

The game remains remarkably successful. Take-Two said in its August 2026 financial update that GTA 5 has now sold-in more than 230 million units worldwide.

That makes its absence from Nintendo hardware especially noticeable.

The fan port does not prove Rockstar could have released the exact same version successfully years ago. Professional development involves performance targets, testing, certification and support that a homebrew experiment does not have to meet.

What it does show is that the original Switch can run GTA 5 natively when developers are willing to make significant compromises.

Does This Mean GTA 5 or GTA 6 Is Coming to Switch 2?

No official announcement has been made.

It would be easy to see the fan port and assume a commercial Nintendo version is coming, but there is currently no verified connection between this project and Rockstar’s plans.

The same applies to Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar and Take-Two currently list GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. Nintendo Switch 2 has not been announced as a platform.

For now, the biggest takeaway is simpler.

Modders have achieved something Rockstar never officially attempted on the original Switch: getting GTA 5 to run natively on the console. It is an impressive technical demonstration, but it is not the long-awaited official GTA 5 Nintendo port.
