Starting January 2028, new games released on PlayStation consoles will no longer be produced on physical discs. Instead, they will be sold through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only.

Sony Says Digital Gaming Is Driving The Decision

According to Sony, the shift reflects how more players now access games.

Tao said the “digitalization” of content has been progressing across entertainment, not just PlayStation. She added that Sony gave the decision a lot of thought before announcing it about a year and a half ahead of the change.

Sony’s original PlayStation Blog post also framed the move as a response to changing consumer preference. The company said the broader entertainment industry has continued to move away from physical media and toward digital access.

The policy will not affect games that have already been released on disc. Sony also said games scheduled to launch before January 2028 can still release in disc format.

That detail matters, but it has not stopped the concern.

Why PlayStation Fans Are Upset

For many players, the issue is not just about convenience. It is about ownership.

Physical games can be collected, resold, borrowed, gifted and preserved. Digital purchases are usually tied to accounts, licenses and storefront access. That difference is why some PlayStation fans see Sony’s move as a major step toward a future where players have less control over the games they buy.

The backlash has focused on several concerns: used game sales, long-term preservation, collector value, internet access and whether digital libraries will remain available years from now.

Ars Technica previously noted that Sony’s move comes at a sensitive time for digital ownership. The company has also faced criticism over digital movie and TV purchases that can become unavailable because of licensing changes.

That is the part that stings for longtime PlayStation users. If a disc works, it works. A digital license can feel less certain.

Retailers May Still Sell Digital Codes

Sony also said it has been speaking with retail partners about the transition.

Tao said retailers have been important to PlayStation for decades and that Sony announced the change early so it could listen to partners before the 2028 cutoff. One possible path is code-in-a-box sales, where retailers sell a physical package containing a download code instead of a disc.

That may keep stores involved, but it will not satisfy everyone.

A box with a code is not the same thing as a disc. It still depends on digital redemption, account access and online infrastructure. For collectors, it also removes the main reason they buy boxed games in the first place.

Retail Groups And Developers Have Criticized The Move

The Entertainment Retailers Association in the UK has already criticized Sony’s plans, saying the decision reduces consumer choice.

ERA CEO Kim Bayley argued that physical games still matter because they can be shared, traded, collected and preserved. The group said digital distribution should complement physical formats, not replace them.

Some developers have also spoken in favor of physical releases. Sandfall Interactive CFO Guillaume Broche, whose studio worked on Clair Obscur, said he understands why the move may make business sense but called it sad from an artistic and collecting standpoint.

That reaction shows why the debate has lasted beyond the original announcement. For Sony, the decision is about where the market is going. For many players, it is about what gaming loses along the way.

The Numbers Still Favor Digital

Sony has a clear business reason for pushing forward.

The Verge reported that Sony’s latest earnings materials showed physical game sales brought in far less than digital game sales and in-game purchases during the 2025 fiscal year. Ars Technica also reported that digital downloads made up 78% of full-game unit purchases during Sony’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.

Those numbers explain why Sony may feel confident about the change. Most PlayStation players are already buying digitally.

But a smaller audience can still be loud, loyal and valuable. Physical buyers include collectors, preservation advocates, used-game shoppers and players in areas where fast internet is not always reliable.

Sony seems to know that. Tao said games are tied to people’s memories and that the company understands the emotions around the decision.

Still, understanding is not the same as reversing course.

What Happens Next

As of this writing, Sony has not announced any plan to cancel or delay the January 2028 deadline.

The company says it will continue exploring how to keep players engaged in a future digital ecosystem. Retail discussions are also expected to continue as Sony works out how digital-only PlayStation games will be sold outside the PlayStation Store.

For now, the message from Sony is clear: it hears the backlash, but the end of new PlayStation game discs is still moving forward.

via: Ars Technica | PlayStation Blog | The Verge | VGC | TechRadar

Sony is not backing away from its plan to stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases, even after strong backlash from players, collectors …

[7
19,23,82
post-188","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gaming-news","tag-playstation-disc","tag-sony","tag-sony-playstation-disc
["GET
