Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella welcomed the addition, saying, “More model choice coming to Copilot. Welcome Grok!”

Elon Musk subsequently confirmed the move in a post saying that Grok is now available in Microsoft Copilot.

Key Facts

Detail

Information

Announcement

Grok models are coming to Microsoft Copilot

Apps

Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Initial availability

Microsoft Frontier program

Announced

September 12, 2026

AI provider

SpaceXAI/xAI

Broader release

Not yet announced

What Did Microsoft Announce?

Microsoft said Grok models are rolling out as another model option inside Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The company described the launch as part of its push to offer users more model choice rather than relying on a single AI provider. Microsoft already works with models from OpenAI and Anthropic across different Copilot experiences, and Grok now adds another major AI family to that strategy.

The first release is limited to Microsoft’s Frontier program rather than every Microsoft 365 user immediately.

Frontier gives eligible customers early access to AI features before they reach general availability. Microsoft says Frontier capabilities can change, expand or even be removed while they are being tested.

What Can Grok Do in Word, Excel and PowerPoint?

The significance of the new rollout is that Grok is being brought into Microsoft Copilot’s existing in-app experience, rather than requiring users to work through a separate Grok application.

In Word, Copilot already supports tasks such as drafting, rewriting and restructuring documents. In Excel, its agentic features can analyze data and make changes involving formulas, tables and visualizations. PowerPoint’s Copilot experience can create and modify presentations while working with existing slides and templates.

Microsoft has not yet published a detailed feature-by-feature breakdown showing whether every existing Copilot action will be available when Grok is selected.

That distinction will be important as the preview expands.

Is This Different From the Existing Grok Microsoft 365 Add-Ins?

Yes.

Grok was already capable of working inside Microsoft Office before this announcement.

SpaceXAI released a Grok add-in for PowerPoint on June 16, followed by Word on June 18 and Excel on July 20. Those add-ins place a separate Grok panel inside each Microsoft 365 application.

The September announcement goes a step further by putting Grok models into Microsoft’s own Copilot experience.

That means the bigger story is not simply that Grok can run inside Office. It is that Microsoft is increasingly turning Copilot into a multi-model AI layer where different providers can potentially compete for the same Word, Excel and PowerPoint workflows.

Why Does Grok in Microsoft Copilot Matter?

For users, model choice could make Copilot considerably more flexible.

AI models do not always produce the same results. One may perform better at writing, another at reasoning through spreadsheet data, and another at researching or restructuring information.

Giving people access to competing models within the same productivity interface could eventually make switching between them much easier than moving work between separate AI websites and desktop applications.

For Microsoft, the move also reinforces a broader strategy: Copilot increasingly looks less like a front end for one AI provider and more like an AI platform capable of routing work across multiple frontier models.

That puts Microsoft in an unusual position. It can continue developing its own Copilot experience while simultaneously giving customers access to models from companies competing with one another.

Who Can Use Grok in Word, Excel and PowerPoint?

The initial Grok rollout is focused on customers in the Microsoft Frontier program, so users should not expect the model to appear immediately in every Microsoft 365 account.

Microsoft describes Frontier as an early-access program for preview AI capabilities.

For individual users, Microsoft currently lists Microsoft 365 Pro, Premium, Personal and Family among the subscriptions eligible for Frontier access. On supported web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, eligible users can enable Preview Frontier Features through Copilot settings. Business access is controlled by administrators.

Availability can still vary by feature, subscription and organization, so Frontier eligibility does not necessarily mean Grok will appear immediately for every enrolled account.

What Should Microsoft 365 Users Do?

Users who want to check for Grok should first determine whether their Microsoft 365 account has access to the Frontier program.

On the web versions of Word, Excel or PowerPoint, eligible individual subscribers can open File > Options > Copilot settings and enable Preview Frontier Features, according to Microsoft’s instructions.

Business users may need their Microsoft 365 administrator to enable Frontier access for their organization.

Because the Grok rollout is described as a focused release, the option may still be unavailable even after Frontier has been enabled.

Sebertech Analysis

The most interesting part of this announcement is not Grok itself—it is Microsoft’s increasingly aggressive move toward multi-model productivity software.

Grok already had standalone add-ins for Microsoft’s major Office apps. Bringing it into Copilot eliminates another layer of separation and puts competing AI models closer to the same document, spreadsheet or presentation workflow.

That could eventually shift the question from “Which AI assistant should I use?” to “Which model should I use for this particular task?”

If Microsoft continues in this direction, the Copilot interface may become more valuable than any single underlying model because users can stay inside Word, Excel or PowerPoint while the intelligence behind the interface changes.

What Is Still Unknown?

Microsoft has not announced when Grok support will become generally available outside the Frontier program.

It has also not provided a complete public breakdown of which Grok models will be available for each Microsoft 365 task, whether model availability will differ between subscriptions, or whether every Copilot capability in Word, Excel and PowerPoint will work identically when Grok is selected.

Those details should become clearer as Microsoft expands the preview.

What Happens Next?

Microsoft is expected to gather feedback from Frontier users before deciding how broadly to expand Grok across Microsoft 365.

For now, the rollout gives early-access users another major AI model inside Copilot while providing a glimpse of Microsoft’s larger strategy: making Word, Excel and PowerPoint places where users can work with multiple competing AI systems without leaving Microsoft’s productivity ecosystem.

Sources: Microsoft 365 announcement on X; Satya Nadella on X; Microsoft Frontier documentation; SpaceXAI/xAI; NDTV Profit.

Written by Liam Hisona

Suggested publication date: September 14, 2026

Microsoft adding Grok directly to Copilot makes Word, Excel and PowerPoint increasingly model-agnostic and gives users another major AI option without leaving the apps where …

[10,6
256,556,554,555,53
post-958","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ai-news","category-computer-news","tag-grok-4-6","tag-grok-in-microsoft-365","tag-grok-in-microsoft-word-excel-powerpoint","tag-grok-microsoft-copilot","tag-microsoft
["GET
