Apple’s long-awaited Siri AI upgrade is getting closer to a wider rollout, and the real question for iPhone users is simple: can it finally compete with ChatGPT?
Bloomberg reported on August 3 that Apple is bringing AI to Siri this fall, with Bloomberg’s Natalie Lung comparing Siri AI and ChatGPT across writing, web search, personal data and productivity.
The comparison comes as Apple tries to turn Siri from a basic voice assistant into a more capable AI helper built around personal context, app actions and everyday iPhone use.
What Apple Is Adding To Siri AI
Apple says the next generation of Apple Intelligence will power an entirely new version of Siri, described as more personal, capable and conversational. The company says Siri AI will be able to search across messages, emails, photos and other personal information, answer questions about many topics and take action inside apps.
That is the biggest difference between Siri AI and ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is strong as a standalone assistant for writing, research, coding, brainstorming and longer work tasks. Siri AI, on the other hand, is being designed to work inside the Apple ecosystem, where it can understand what is already on a user’s iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Apple also says Siri AI can generate drafts, give writing feedback and match a user’s writing style in Messages and Mail. It can also help with app actions, such as editing a message, adding a song to a playlist or finding saved information from personal apps.
Where ChatGPT Still Looks Stronger
ChatGPT remains the stronger choice for users who want a deeper, more flexible AI assistant.
OpenAI’s recent updates show that ChatGPT is moving beyond chat into voice, work and agent-style tasks. GPT-Live allows ChatGPT Voice to listen and speak at the same time, use web search and memory, show visual results and work with text and images in the same conversation.
OpenAI also says ChatGPT Work can create and edit documents, slide decks, spreadsheets, charts, PDFs, images and other deliverables using a user’s tools, files and apps.
That gives ChatGPT an advantage for longer work sessions, research-heavy tasks and projects that need more than a quick answer.
Bloomberg’s Early Take: Siri Is More Cautious
One notable difference from Bloomberg’s hands-on comparison appears to be tone and boundaries.
In a LinkedIn post about the review, Bloomberg’s Natalie Lung said Siri AI was more cautious when asked for personal advice on topics like fitness or life. She noted that Siri made clear it was not a friend, doctor or coach, and often recommended speaking with a human instead of continuing with probing questions.
That may frustrate users who want a conversational AI companion. But it also fits Apple’s usual style: safer, more controlled and more careful with personal or sensitive advice.
Siri AI’s Advantage Is Personal Context
Siri AI may not beat ChatGPT at everything. But it does not need to.
Apple’s best chance is making Siri useful in places where ChatGPT still feels separate from the device. For example, asking Siri to find a photo from years ago, pull up details from an email, create a reminder from a message or act inside apps could feel more natural on an iPhone than opening a separate chatbot.
That personal context could be the reason many Apple users try Siri AI first.
ChatGPT’s Advantage Is Depth
ChatGPT’s edge is still depth.
For writing, research, planning, creative work and complex productivity tasks, ChatGPT has a broader toolset and a more mature assistant experience. It is also not limited to Apple devices, which makes it more useful for people who work across Windows, Android, web apps and business platforms.
In simple terms, Siri AI looks built for the Apple user’s daily life. ChatGPT looks built for deeper work.
Which AI Assistant Is Better?
Right now, the better assistant depends on the job.
Siri AI looks more useful for Apple users who want quick help, personal context, app actions and device-level assistance. ChatGPT looks better for users who want stronger writing help, richer research, advanced voice conversations and longer productivity workflows.
The bigger story is that Apple is no longer treating Siri as just a voice command tool. It is turning Siri into a full AI assistant at the same time ChatGPT is becoming more like a work platform.
That sets up a much closer fight this fall.
As of this writing, Apple says new Siri AI features are available for developer testing and will be available as a beta later this year.
