Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct Reveals Main Protagonist, Time-Travel Story, And Combat Details

Nintendo has shared new details for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, giving fans a closer look at the game’s main protagonist, time-travel story, combat system, and release plans for Nintendo Switch 2.

The update came during the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct on August 4, where Nintendo showed roughly 20 minutes of new information about the upcoming tactical RPG.

The game launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.

At first, Fortune’s Weave appears to center on four playable heroes competing in the Heroic Games. But the Direct revealed that the tournament is only one side of the story.

The larger conflict takes place five years later, after the Dagdan Empire faces destruction following the return of the demon god Balor.

In that future timeline, Sothis summons a chosen soul to stop the end of the world. This white-clad hero becomes the game’s true central protagonist, according to Game Informer.

The character is tasked with using Fortuna’s time-travel powers to change the fates of the four heroes and bring them together for the battle ahead.

Four Heroes Shape The Past

The story begins in the Dagdan Empire, a land ruled by the gods and centered around the capital city of Dagsion.

Warriors from across the land gather there to compete in the Heroic Games, where the winner is promised one wish by Solel, ruler of the empire.

The four main heroes are Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Each joins the tournament for a different reason.

Cai enters the Heroic Games to save his imprisoned father. Dietrich joins after surviving an attack from a massive monster. Theodora fights to restore honor to her goddess and protect her kingdom. Leda gives up her privileged life to seek revenge against her father’s murderer.

Players can follow each hero’s path and switch between their stories. Nintendo said progress is saved separately for each hero, allowing players to experience the four routes in parallel.

Time Travel Connects The Past And Future

The Direct made it clear that Fortune’s Weave is not only about winning the Heroic Games.

Five years after the tournament, Balor returns and pushes the world toward ruin. The four heroes have vanished, and the future depends on changing what happened in the past.

That is where the main protagonist comes in.

Rather than facing Balor alone, the hero travels back to the time of the Heroic Games to influence the four champions’ fates. The goal is to assemble them in the future and save Dagda from destruction.

This gives Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave a dual structure: players follow the personal stories of the four heroes in the past while building toward a larger battle in the future.

Combat Brings Back Classic Fire Emblem Strategy

Battles follow the familiar Fire Emblem formula, with players placing units on a grid and taking turns against enemy forces.

Units can use weapons such as swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, and magic. Positioning remains important, with terrain, attack range, enemy weapons, and nearby allies affecting the outcome of each fight.

Combat Arts also return as stronger attacks that use weapon durability.

Blaze Arts are new hero-specific moves that can turn the tide of battle. Nintendo showed Cai unleashing flames, Dietrich warping across the battlefield, and Leda using music to support allies while summoning a monster.

The game also includes Fortuna’s Blessing, a rewind feature that lets players turn back time after each move. This gives players a way to recover from mistakes, rethink a strategy, or save a routed unit.

Players Can Explore Dagsion Between Battles

Outside combat, players can explore Dagsion and prepare for upcoming matches.

The Direct showed several facilities, including the Arena, Shopping Arcade, Temple Row, Certification Exams, quests, recruitment options, and inns.

At the Arena, players can train units and watch rival battles to gather information. The Shopping Arcade lets players buy and enhance weapons. Temple Row offers blessings that can provide temporary battle advantages.

Certification Exams allow units to unlock new classes if they meet the needed requirements. Recruitment also plays a role, though some characters may need gifts or meals before joining the player’s army.

Outside the capital, players can explore the wider world, gather information, fight random encounters, enter dungeons, and collect materials for weapons.

Classes And Progression Get More Detail

Nintendo also explained how classes work in Fortune’s Weave.

Units can progress through beginner, specialty, and advanced classes. Beginner classes cover basic combat roles, while specialty classes offer more specific abilities. Advanced classes include stronger options such as heavily armored mounted units, spear and white magic users, and elephant riders.

The system appears to give players more control over how their army develops as the story moves between the Heroic Games and the future war against Balor.

More Updates Are Coming Before Launch

The Nintendo Today app will also receive new Fire Emblem themes and additional information before launch.

Nintendo said a new Ask the Developer article for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will be published on September 15.
