Google’s Pixel 11 Pro can record 4K video at up to 60fps directly on the phone, but shooting at its headline 8K resolution still requires Google’s Video Boost cloud processing.

The limitation means Pixel 11 Pro owners cannot record and immediately access finished 8K footage entirely on-device. Instead, Google processes the video through Google Photos before returning the enhanced version.
Google’s official specifications confirm that the Pixel 11 Pro supports local 4K recording at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second. Its 8K mode, which runs at up to 30fps, is powered by Video Boost.
That puts Google’s approach in contrast with Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, which can record 8K video at 30fps directly on the device.
Why Does Pixel 11 Pro 8K Video Need the Cloud?
Google uses Video Boost to handle the heavier processing required for the Pixel 11 Pro’s 8K footage.
When Video Boost is switched on, the phone records additional video data before uploading it through Google Photos. Google’s servers then process the footage and deliver the enhanced version back to the user’s library.
The process means getting the finished video can depend on both the size of the recording and the speed of the internet connection.
Google also limits individual Video Boost recordings to 10 minutes. Users need Google Photos backup enabled, and anyone who allows backups only over Wi-Fi will need a Wi-Fi connection before processing can begin.
The important distinction is that ordinary Pixel 11 Pro video does not require the cloud. Users can still record 4K at up to 60fps directly on the phone. The extra step applies when using features such as 8K Video Boost.
How Do Samsung and Apple Compare?
Samsung offers a more straightforward option for users who specifically want 8K video because the Galaxy S26 Ultra can record 8K at 30fps without first sending the footage to a cloud service.
Apple takes a different route with the iPhone 17 Pro. It does not offer 8K recording, but it can capture 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120fps using its main camera.
The iPhone 17 Pro also supports features aimed at more demanding video users, including ProRes recording at up to 4K120 when using external storage.
For most buyers, the difference comes down to convenience rather than resolution alone. Samsung users can record 8K and access the resulting file immediately, while Apple’s high-end 4K modes also work without a cloud-processing step.
Pixel 11 Pro owners using 8K Video Boost may have to wait for their footage to upload and finish processing before the final version becomes available.
Pro Stable Video Also Relies on Video Boost
Google’s Pro Stable Video feature uses the same Video Boost system.
The feature is designed to produce smoother footage when recording movement in supported conditions. Because it relies on Video Boost, the final enhanced result also needs Google’s cloud processing.
That reliance is notable because Google says its Tensor G6 processor delivers a substantial increase in AI performance compared with the previous generation. Even with the faster chip, Google continues to use its servers for some of the Pixel 11 Pro’s most demanding camera features.
For mainstream users, that is less about processor specifications and more about how quickly footage can be used. Someone recording an event, trip or social video may prefer to edit or share a finished file immediately rather than wait for additional processing.
Will Google Bring 8K Processing On-Device?
Google has not announced plans to enable fully on-device 8K recording on the Pixel 11 Pro.
Video Boost remains part of Google’s broader approach to Pixel photography and video, using cloud computing to perform processing that the company does not currently handle entirely on the handset.
The service has also faced an early software issue. Google confirmed that it developed a fix for static audio reported in some Pixel 11 Pro Video Boost recordings, with a Camera app update expected to address the problem.
For buyers comparing flagship camera phones, the trade-off is clear. The Pixel 11 Pro can produce 8K video, but Google’s highest-resolution recording still comes with an extra cloud-processing step that Samsung’s flagship does not require.
The next question is whether future Pixel hardware will move more of those demanding video features directly onto the phone.
