Nintendo could have folded Zelda into its regular September Direct, but giving the series a separate 30-minute presentation makes its 40th anniversary feel like a major event of its own.
Nintendo is preparing two back-to-back Direct presentations on September 8 and September 9, 2026, giving The Legend of Zelda its own anniversary showcase before turning attention to upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games.
The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct will run for about 30 minutes on September 8. A regular Nintendo Direct follows one day later and will last around 45 minutes. Both start at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, or 10 p.m. Philippine Time.
When Are the September 2026 Nintendo Directs?
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs Tuesday, September 8 at 7 a.m. PT, while the general Nintendo Direct airs Wednesday, September 9 at the same time. For viewers in the Philippines, both start at 10 p.m. PHT.
Nintendo says the Zelda presentation will last approximately 30 minutes and contain a variety of information related to the series’ 40th anniversary.
The September 9 Nintendo Direct will be longer at about 45 minutes. Nintendo’s European announcement says the presentation will focus on games coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this winter.
Together, the two Directs give fans about 75 minutes of presentations across two days, before counting an additional Nintendo Treehouse: Live broadcast planned after the September 9 Direct.
Why Is Zelda Getting a Separate Nintendo Direct?
Nintendo has not explained why it chose to separate Zelda from the main showcase, but the company has made the purpose of the first presentation clear: it is specifically celebrating 40 years of The Legend of Zelda.
That separation is important because it gives Nintendo room to talk about Zelda without taking time away from its wider Switch 2 lineup.
The company could use the 30-minute show for games, anniversary activities, merchandise or other Zelda projects. However, Nintendo has not published a list of announcements that will appear, so specific predictions should still be treated as speculation.
One confirmed project that fans will naturally be watching for is the new version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo officially revealed that project during its June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct, saying Ocarina of Time would be “reborn” on Switch 2. Nintendo has not confirmed that it will appear during the September 8 anniversary presentation, however.
That distinction matters. An announced Zelda project is not automatically a confirmed September Direct announcement.
What Will Nintendo Show on September 9?
Nintendo has provided a little more direction for the second presentation.
The regular Nintendo Direct will run for roughly 45 minutes and focus on games headed to Nintendo Switch 2 during winter.
Nintendo has not released the full game lineup in advance.
That leaves plenty of room for new announcements, release dates and updates on previously announced games. But until Nintendo shows them, rumored titles and online predictions should not be presented as part of the confirmed Direct schedule.
Nintendo is also planning a Nintendo Treehouse: Live | September 2026 presentation immediately after the September 9 Direct. The company says the Treehouse stream will show gameplay from selected titles featured during the main presentation.
That means some games revealed or updated during the Direct could receive a much closer look shortly afterward.
Why the Two-Day Format Matters
The most interesting part of Nintendo’s announcement may be the way it has divided the week.
Instead of making Zelda one section of a 45-minute general presentation, Nintendo is giving the franchise a full half-hour to itself. The following evening can then concentrate on the wider Switch 2 release schedule.
For Zelda fans, that removes one common problem with general Nintendo Directs: waiting through unrelated announcements to find out whether Zelda appears at all.
It also gives Nintendo more space to celebrate the franchise’s history while keeping its broader Switch 2 plans separate.
The result is effectively a two-night Nintendo event rather than a single September showcase.
How Can You Watch Both Nintendo Directs?
Nintendo will carry the presentations through its official Nintendo Direct website and video channels. The company also says viewers can watch through the Nintendo Today! smart-device app, although the app requires a Nintendo Account and is not available in every country.
For Philippine viewers, the schedule is straightforward:
- September 8, 10 p.m. PHT: The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct — approximately 30 minutes.
- September 9, 10 p.m. PHT: Nintendo Direct — approximately 45 minutes, followed by Nintendo Treehouse: Live.
What Nintendo actually reveals remains the big unknown.
For now, the safest expectation is also the simplest: September 8 belongs to Zelda, while September 9 belongs to Nintendo’s wider Switch 2 winter lineup.
