Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Celebration Gives Trainers a Special Mewtwo

Pokémon GO is giving Trainers worldwide a special Mewtwo as part of its 10th anniversary celebration.

The reward is available through free Timed Research, which runs from Wednesday, August 12, at 4:00 p.m. PDT until Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time.

According to the Pokémon GO team, completing the Timed Research will lead to an encounter with a Mewtwo that has maxed-out stats and a Special Background.

The Mewtwo caught from the research will also have the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y.

That makes the anniversary gift one of the more notable free rewards Pokémon GO has offered in 2026, especially for Trainers who use Mewtwo in raids or have been collecting Mega Mewtwo Energy since Pokémon GO Fest 2026.

The reward also gives players a guaranteed way to add a strong Mewtwo to their collection without relying on raid luck.

Pokémon GO said the giveaway is part of its 10-year milestone celebration and thanked Trainers for the journey the community has shared over the past decade.

The announcement comes after Pokémon GO’s major anniversary moment in Times Square in July, where players gathered for a large-scale Mewtwo-themed celebration tied to the game’s original vision of real-world community play.

There is one important deadline.

Timed Research expires, which means Trainers must complete the tasks and claim all rewards before Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time. Anyone who misses the deadline may lose access to the Mewtwo encounter.

Pokémon GO also clarified that Trainers who caught a Mewtwo during the in-person Times Square event on July 9 will receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards.

The team added that Mewtwo with a Times Square background will be available again in the future, though no exact return date has been announced as of this writing.

Fan-run event tracker Leek Duck also listed the Timed Research rewards as a Master Ball, 500 Mega Mewtwo Y Mega Energy, and the special Mewtwo encounter.

The surprise reward quickly drew attention from the Pokémon GO community. Players on X, Facebook, and Reddit highlighted the chance to receive what many called a free “hundo” Mewtwo, while others pointed out that the reward could affect how they value older Mewtwo catches from past raids.

For now, Trainers should open Pokémon GO, check the Timed Research tab, and finish the anniversary tasks before the September deadline.
