Tesla’s new Cybercab includes several useful accessibility features, but one design limit matters more than the early praise suggests: passengers must sit in one of the car’s two seats during the ride.

Tesla began offering limited Cybercab rides in Austin, Texas, on September 3, 2026. The two-seat robotaxi has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal.
Tesla says it was designed to be easier for disabled riders to use, with wheelchair-height seating, Braille markings, space for service animals and audio and visual tools.
Can Wheelchair Users Ride in Tesla Cybercab Without Leaving Their Wheelchair?
No. Tesla’s own rider guide says every Cybercab passenger must remain seated in one of the vehicle’s two seats with a seat belt fastened for the entire trip.
That means the Cybercab is not a roll-in vehicle where a passenger can stay in a wheelchair while traveling.
Tesla provides a bench-style seat at wheelchair height to make transfers easier.
The company also says the rear trunk can hold wheelchairs and other assistive devices. Its detailed rider guide gives one small, folded wheelchair as an example of what can fit in the Cybercab’s 20.2-cubic-foot trunk.
For wheelchair users who can transfer independently, those features could make the robotaxi easier to use. For people who cannot safely move out of their wheelchair, however, the current design may not be suitable.
What Accessibility Features Does Cybercab Have?
Tesla lists several features aimed at disabled riders.
The Cybercab has Braille on its doors and overhead buttons. Riders can use audio and visual information through the touchscreen and Tesla Robotaxi app. The cabin has room for service animals, and its step-in height is 16.5 inches.
The butterfly doors can open automatically when the vehicle detects the phone of the person who booked the ride. Riders can also control the doors through the app, touchscreen or an exterior button.
These details matter because there is no driver inside the Cybercab to help a passenger enter, load equipment or explain the trip. A driverless service has to give riders enough control to complete a journey without depending on a human driver.
Why Is the Wheelchair Limitation Important?
Accessibility does not work the same way for every disabled person.
A seat positioned at wheelchair height can help someone who can transfer into a car seat. It does not solve the same problem for a passenger who needs to remain in a wheelchair because of mobility or medical needs.
Tesla’s rider guide makes the seating rule clear.
Occupants must sit properly, keep their feet on the floor and wear a seat belt before the ride can begin. Tesla says the vehicle may pull over or cancel a ride if it detects improper seat-belt use.
That is why it would be misleading to describe Cybercab simply as “wheelchair accessible” without explaining the transfer requirement.
Early positive comments from disabled riders may still be useful as personal experiences, but they should not be treated as proof that the vehicle works for everyone. Different disabilities create very different transportation needs.
How Widely Available Is Cybercab in Austin?
The rollout is still limited.
Reuters reported on September 3 that Texas records showed 420 autonomous Tesla vehicles registered in the state, including 45 Cybercabs. That does not mean all 45 Cybercabs are carrying passengers at the same time.
Tesla says Cybercab rides are available only in limited areas of Austin. Riders request a trip through the Robotaxi app, and Tesla assigns a vehicle based on availability and the number of passengers. Cybercab itself carries no more than two people.
Federal regulators are also looking more closely at the vehicle.
On September 4, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an Audit Query into Tesla’s self-certification that Cybercab meets federal vehicle safety standards. NHTSA said it will examine the technical information and processes Tesla used to certify a vehicle that lacks traditional human controls.
What Does This Mean for Disabled Riders?
Cybercab could still be a meaningful step toward more independent transportation for some people with disabilities.
Its lower seating position, Braille markings, service-animal space and app-based controls show that Tesla considered accessibility as part of the vehicle’s design.
But the real test is not whether a few early riders have good experiences. It is whether people with different disabilities can use the service safely and consistently without outside help.
For now, the clearest conclusion is that Cybercab offers useful accessibility features, but it is not a complete solution for every wheelchair user.
As Tesla expands beyond its limited Austin rollout, one question will become more important: whether future versions can support riders who need to remain in their wheelchairs, not just those who can transfer into a seat.
